Cat care needed at my mountaintop retreat in the Appalachian mountains. I'm seeking a qualified pet sitter for my cat Mittens. The property is located in an adorable town called Franklin, NC. Sitting atop a mountain where you'll enjoy stunning mountain views in a private escape.

Responsibilities include feeding Mittens and giving him attention. He takes medication 2x per day which is just added to his food-super easy. He mostly stays inside but may go out for brief periods during the day. ... Read more
Cat care needed at my mountaintop retreat in the Appalachian mountains.

He does not go out at night.

There is also a hot tub which is low maintenance but may need a little bit of attention during your stay- about once per week. You are more than welcome to enjoy it too! I will instruct on what needs to be done--usually just testing the water PH and changing out the chlorine cartridge which is VERY easy to do.

The house is split level-you'll stay on the main living level as the lower/basement level is a finished out apartment that I rent out on Air BNB.

The Air BNB apartment is completely separate from the upstairs main house with it's own separate entrance and private deck. It's is usually only booked out for 2-3 days at at time on the weekends. It is very possible that there will be an Air BNB guest during your housesit but no interaction with guests is needed. I have a cleaning crew to take care of the turnovers so you will not need to worry about this during your sit.

Things to note: The property is located in the Western North Carolina mountains. To get these incredible views requires a drive up a steep gravel road as well as a steep driveway at my house. A regular car will do just fine getting up the mountain and you DON'T need 4WD. But some people get scared of the roads if you're not used to mountain driving. I'm a single woman who moved from Texas and I've never had a problem driving these roads, But it can take a few tries to get used to them. I understand that some people this will not be a fit but please assess this for yourself before accepting this sit.

The house is 6 miles west of downtown Franklin, NC and easily accessible from Highway 64. The house is a great spot for someone looking for a relaxing and peaceful retreat in a beautiful location.

Cell service on the mountain is excellent especially on Verizon. Internet Wi-Fi is available via Starlink and is decent speed. I personally work from home and use Zoom every day for my meetings and have no issues.

Easy access to amenities like Lowes, Wal-Mart, grocery store and Franklin, NC nightlife are about a 15 minute drive. The property is also close to the Appalachian Trail, waterfalls, and all the natural beauty this region has to offer. You'll definitely need a car to get around.

References are required and will be checked for this housesit. I'm leaving on September 10th and absolutely must have a sitter who can arrive by October 8th or 9th at the latest so I can familiarize you with the house.

You must be able bodied and have your own car. This is mountain living and this sit is happening at one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL times of year here-the October "leaf" season will be in full effect and is absolutely stunning!

I look forward to hearing from you!

Susan

favoriteWhat we love about our area

This area is absolutely stunning. The house is located in a small community but feels like you are miles away and you cannot see the neighbors as we are on two acres. Tons of hiking and nature nearby plus the benefit of the lovely town of Franklin just down the road.

Steep driveway / walkway, The drive up to the house is on winding gravel roads. The roads are well maintained by our HOA but they are steep and narrow and may not be everybody's cup of tea. 2WD car works just fine but if you are not used to driving mountain roads it may take a bit of getting used to.

Feed the cat each day and give him lots of love. He takes liquid medication in his food twice per day-super easy, just need to add it to the food. You can also allow him to go outside during the daytime only, mostly he likes to be indoors.

medicationMedication/treatment required

Liquid medicine added to his food 2x per day to control hyperthyroidism.

Important info

The roads up to the house are gravel and steep but a 2WD car will work just fine. House is split level and the garage parking is on the lower level with an interior stairwell to get to main living level-which is also at "Ground" level as the house is built into the side of a hill.

House is in remote area 3-miles off paved & on steep hill. Electric out for few hours on 25th. Texted her I would be leaving on 27th. She texted me. “OK, sounds good. Safe travels and sorry it didn’t work out.” I set heat to 57, had faucets dripping 1 drop every 1-2 seconds to keep pipes from freezing. House & litter boxes cleaned. Cat had fresh water, wet food & dry food bowl filled, & 2-lights on

As I said, I have NEVER run out to propane or heat nor would I allow that to happen. The propane company arrrived the day you left. You left the house a 52 degrees despite my request to set it at 64. The propane company arrrived the day you left. You left the house a 52 degrees despite my request to set it at 64. You scared off my Air BNB guests who asked for a refund, left the hot tub exposed to the elements, and lost the house key. Your claim to being 'familiar with moutnain properties' was clearly false. You had full disclosure of the property and what to expect before accepting the sit It's the mountains. It's cold. Winter weather sometimes happens. I asked you to leave because I was worried about your mental state, your wellbeing, and the welfare of my cat. You've caused me financial loss, property damage, and ruined my trip. You should never have accepetd this sit in the first place.

The only critique I have is that Susan absolutely undersold how amazing her mountain sanctuary is! The views from her porch are breathtaking. If you want a magical place to enjoy your morning coffee while you listen to the birds, this is the place for you. Not only is her cat possibly the easiest pet to sit for, but Mittens is a lovey lap cat, content to hang with you as much as possible. He was such a doll, and it was heartbreaking to leave him. Susan went above and beyond as a homeowner, communicated everything perfectly, checking in to make sure all was well. Her home was well-appointed and so comfortable. It was a perfect retreat. I would recommend Susan and Mittens to anyone who is looking for a mountain escape close to hiking trails!
