How it works

House-sitting is fundamentally WIN-WIN. It is a very SIMPLE transaction, and it makes a lot of people VERY HAPPY.

Homeowners get their house, pets or garden cared for while they are away, and the sitter gets to stay in a lovely home, rent-free (normally). It’s that simple.

And, in most situations, it’s all absolutely FREE* Apart from everyday costs like pet food, and possible emergency costs, neither the homeowner or the sitter** usually pays anything for this transaction.

Have a look through our list of available house-sitters and houses, read some of the testimonials, then register as an owner or sitter. As soon as you are registered, you can get started.

Pet care at home - FREE*

Having your pets looked after in their own home, with individual attention and familiar routines, is the very best care you can provide.

The alternatives, apart from being intrinsically traumatising, are very expensive and have inherent risks.

Kennels and cat boarding facilities have trouble managing problems like violent animals and diseases like kennel cough. They also struggle to provide individual care, especially if there are special requirements.

Even pet-sitters and dog walkers can only normally spend a short amount of time with your beloved friend, leaving them alone for the majority of the day and night.

Garden maintenance and House Security - FREE*

You just want your house and garden to be safe. You want to be confident that everything will be just as you left it, when you return. Get a house sitter.

Our house-sitters are typically really lovely, responsible people who have chosen house-sitting to save money and/or travel around this big, beautiful country.

There is nothing as secure as having your house lived in while you're away. Not only does it guard against burglary or vandalism, the house sitter is also available to handle emergencies like storm damage or burst pipes.

And if you have a garden to nurture, get a house-sitter to look after it - many of them have tended their own gardens for years.

Accommodation - FREE**

Yes, it's pretty obvious what the benefits are. Free accommodation** in return for pet or garden care and house security.

And you're making someone else's life much easier at the same time!

It is a wonderful way to save money and the ideal way to see the country, living as a local for a short or long stay.

You may be moving to a town, and just want short-term accommodation while you organise a permanent place. You may have retired and want to experience more of this wonderful country. You may be able to work remotely, so free accommodation is a huge benefit. There are lots of reasons to house sit. Start right now.

*FREE: House sitters don't normally charge a fee, and homeowners don't usually charge any rent. Individuals can, however, make any arrangements they like, to suit their own individual situations. Note also that some costs are normally involved in the simple running of a house e.g. utility bills, pet food, emergency Vet costs etc.

**FREE: After you (the house sitter) pay your $30 annual membership fee, everything else is normally free (see note above).
