Q: Do you send out a list of house sitters through the post?
A:

No. In this modern age the internet is accessible to most people. We also like the idea of being environmentally friendly (no paper!)

Q: How do I contact homeowners?
A:

We offer homeowners FREE advertising on our website but only our house sitting members are able to contact them directly. You must be a registered member to be able to view these contact details.

Q: How do I contact a house sitter?
A:

It’s easy! Homeowners register for FREE then within minutes they have access to all the house sitters listed with us. The homeowner can then email and/or phone the house sitter and enquire if they are interested in minding their house.

Q: How do I update my house sitting profile or change personal details?
A:

Simply login to your account and either click on the 'sitter profile' or 'login details' tab to update your details.

Q: Do you send out renewal reminders?
A:

Yes, we email reminder notices a few weeks before your membership expires.

Q: How long does it take House Sitters America to reply to email enquiries?
A:

Generally we reply to email enquiries within 24 hours but please allow 48 hours depending on demand.

Q: How is the house sitter list ordered?
A:

The house sitter list is ordered by the most recent house sitter to have logged in. This way active house sitters will float around the top of the list but those who no longer require a house sit, or those who are currently on a house sit, filter towards the bottom of the list.

Q: I haven’t house sat before. Will this be a disadvantage?
A:

Every house sitter has to start somewhere. Most homeowners are willing to consider first time house sitters. First time house sitters tend to emphasize other qualities they have within their profile. Remember that just because you have house sat before does not mean you are a better house sitter than someone who has not house sat at all.

Q: Do you send out Alert Emails if a sitting position is advertised in my preferred area?
A:

No. From our research we discovered that sending out automated Alert Emails to every member interested in that particular area can be counter productive. Potentially the homeowner who has advertised can end up receiving dozens (maybe many dozens) of emails from house sitters. They then get overwhelmed by the enormity of the amount of emails received and simply delete most of them, without replying. This leaves many house sitters unhappy not to have heard anything back, and the homeowner doesn't use the free advert option again. So even though these Alert Emails sound good, in many cases they can leave people annoyed or frustrated.

It only takes minutes to visit the website and check if there are any new listings. House Sitters America has a great search facility, including state, county and city searches & maps.

Q: I don’t have an email account is that going to be a problem?
A:

You will need to have an email account when you first sign up so you can activate your profile but once you have registered you have the ability to choose to be contacted by phone if that’s preferable.

Q: Do you have a phone contact?
A:

You may have noticed that House Sitters America does not provide a customer service phone number. In order to keep our prices as low as possible, we have found that the best way to communicate with you is by email. Because we really value all our members and aim to provide a professional service, you may rest assured that we will answer all queries promptly and efficiently. We have compiled a detailed list of FAQs that hopefully will cover most of your questions but our experienced staff are only too happy to answer any email queries you may have.  We strongly believe in the many benefits of house sitting and caretaking for both home owners and house sitters and we aim to provide information and support to assist all of our members and enquiring home owners in successfully utilising our website. Please go to our 'Contact Us' page for email details.

Q: Do many homeowners ask you to house sit again?
A: Word of mouth is by far the best way to keep yourself employed as a house & pet sitter. If you engage in one or two house sitting jobs that are well received by the homeowner you are probably going to get called upon for their next away trip plus the homeowner’s family and friends’ away trips! This could potentially extend on to the friend’s friends and their friend’s friends etc. So if you happen to get one small house sit in Queens think of it as potentially house sitting New York!  One or two small pet minding jobs in outskirts Chicago could potentially mean house sitting Chicago itself! Think of your first sitting job as potentially many years of free accommodation.
